All of these considerations will determine whether a Gravity Retaining Wall or a Geogrid Reinforced Retaining Wall is required.
Gravity retaining walls are typically shorter in height and rely on their own weight and setback to retain soil. Allan Block retaining walls are suitable for this type of wall because they lock together to provide a setback when stacked together. This setback aids the wall’s ability to withstand pressure from the soils behind it.
Reinforced retaining walls are those that use some type of reinforcement to give the retaining wall structure greater strength, boosting its ability to retain soils behind it. This reinforcement is known as geogrid or grid for SRWs (Segmental Retaining Walls). During installation, geogrid is laid between courses of blocks in the wall and rolled back into the slope or hillside to form a stronger and more stable soil mass. In layman’s words, the blocks, geogrid, and reinforced soil mass all work together to form one massive, hefty retaining wall structure. Due to space or other site restrictions, grid is not always a viable solution on a project, so alternate reinforcement materials – such as no-fines concrete, soil nails, or earth anchors – must be employed. These types of reinforcement typically necessitate the use of a local engineer for design and a certified contractor for installation.
Many diverse retaining wall materials have helped to change the landscape in which we live throughout the years. Railroad ties or treated timbers, as well as wall stones, natural stones, bricks, and concrete block, are common retaining wall products.

Some of the most prevalent textures include a hard-split or soft-split appearance, a tumbled appearance, and, more recently, a stamped face.
