This reinforcement is known as geogrid or grid for SRWs (Segmental Retaining Walls). During installation, geogrid is laid between courses of blocks in the wall and rolled back into the slope or hillside to form a stronger and more stable soil mass. In layman’s words, the blocks, geogrid, and reinforced soil mass all work together to form one massive, hefty retaining wall structure. Due to space or other site restrictions, grid is not always a viable solution on a project, so alternate reinforcement materials – such as no-fines concrete, soil nails, or earth anchors – must be employed. These types of reinforcement typically necessitate the use of a local engineer for design and a certified contractor for installation.
