Retaining Wall Service

A retaining wall is a structure that holds or keeps soil in place behind it. Concrete blocks, poured concrete, treated timbers, pebbles, and boulders are just a few of the materials that can be utilized to build retaining walls. Some are simple to use, while others have a shorter lifespan, but they all have the ability to retain soil.

One of the primary functions of a retaining wall is to keep soil back. If the soil slopes downward, it is very likely that erosion will occur in the area. Retaining walls can also be used to keep water out.

Several questions must be answered before constructing the correct type of retaining wall. Is the soil, for example, sand, clay, or anything in between? Is it a driveway or something heavy, like a pool, that is above the wall? Is the ground above or below the wall level or sloping? What is the wall’s height? All of these considerations will determine whether a Gravity Retaining Wall or a Geogrid Reinforced Retaining Wall is required.

Gravity retaining walls are typically shorter in height and rely on their own weight and setback to retain soil. Allan Block retaining walls are suitable for this type of wall because they lock together to provide a setback when stacked together. This setback aids the wall’s ability to withstand pressure from the soils behind it.

Reinforced retaining walls are those that use some type of reinforcement to give the retaining wall structure greater strength, boosting its ability to retain soils behind it. This reinforcement is known as geogrid or grid for SRWs (Segmental Retaining Walls). During installation, geogrid is laid between courses of blocks in the wall and rolled back into the slope or hillside to form a stronger and more stable soil mass. In layman’s words, the blocks, geogrid, and reinforced soil mass all work together to form one massive, hefty retaining wall structure. Due to space or other site restrictions, grid is not always a viable solution on a project, so alternate reinforcement materials – such as no-fines concrete, soil nails, or earth anchors – must be employed. These types of reinforcement typically necessitate the use of a local engineer for design and a certified contractor for installation.

Many diverse retaining wall materials have helped to change the landscape in which we live throughout the years. Railroad ties or treated timbers, as well as wall stones, natural stones, bricks, and concrete block, are common retaining wall products.

While wood is generally a low-cost and straightforward solution for a retaining wall, its short lifespan makes it a poor choice. Your retaining wall and the integrity of your usable space deteriorate as the wood decomposes. Although stones, rocks, or boulders can be used to build magnificent retaining walls, their installation can be costly and time-consuming. Furthermore, stone walls can be difficult to maintain since they might disintegrate over time or become a habitat for mice and plants.

Retaining walls that are cast in place or mortared are another alternative. These walls can be finished with a variety of veneers, bricks, flagstones, and other materials to create texture and design. However, these structures are stiff and do not move or flex in response to climate change, earthquakes, or other natural forces, and they can be quite expensive to build.

SRWs (Segmental Retaining Walls), such as the Allan Block products, provide modular and interlocking concrete masonry blocks for convenience of usage. Simply stack the mortarless blocks together using our installation instructions to build a maintenance-free retaining wall that will expand usable land, correct a grading or slope issue, and handle a variety of other site issues. These SRWs are built with procedures similar to those used in the mortarless building of the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Egypt, and they will survive the test of time. SRWs are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors, as well as various facing textures. Some of the most prevalent textures include a hard-split or soft-split appearance, a tumbled appearance, and, more recently, a stamped face. There are also concrete blocks constructed from recycled materials available. When you build a wall with an SRW, you can be confident that it will last.

Yes. Planting or landscaping in the block cores or behind the blocks is simple and safe for the environment. Allan Block, for example, does not absorb any toxic chemicals that could harm your plants or bushes. A drip irrigation system can even be incorporated inside the wall as it is being built.

Yes. Fences can be erected inside the hollow core of the blocks or beyond the wall. To support the wind load from the fence, the wall may need to be reinforced. For special concerns while building a fence, consult your landscape architect or contact us.

Without a retaining wall, you may face major drainage problems, which may also lead damage to your landscaping. Retaining walls serve to prevent erosion, control water flow, and make your outdoor spaces more visually appealing.

Excavation Service

A grading contractor is someone who can grade your land for you and then restore it to its original condition. They are responsible for the overall appearance of a property by grading the ground, leveling everything out, and ensuring that everything is precisely how it should be.

Grading is the work or act of assuring a level base or a specific slope in construction/excavation. In general, grade refers to the ground level or elevation at any given position.

Excavation, in its most basic form, refers to work that involves the removal of soil or rock from a building site or region within a site in order to make an open face, pit, or cavity using tools or machinery.

The removal of the layer of soil directly beneath the topsoil and on top of rock is known as earth excavation.

Muck excavation is the removal of debris with an excess of water and undesirable soil.

The removal of any mix of topsoil, earth, rock, and muck is described as unclassified excavation.

A Final Grade is the installation of specific materials, such as screened topsoil, on top of a clay basis known as the “Rough Grade,” which promotes proper drainage and the passage of surplus water away from existing structures.

Grading is a landscaping term that refers to the sloping of a yard away from a home’s foundation. The process of creating a smooth surface in a lawn or yard is known as leveling. When it comes to creating a nicely landscaped yard, both are critical pieces of the puzzle.

Land grading is the process of leveling the surface of the land. Dirt from higher up is moved into lower-lying places to create a nice level surface that will serve as the basis for your project.
